Fragrance creation

Our unique natural fragrance blends are part of a careful and thorough process designed to take you on a journey with us to France.

We first start with a memory, or a feeling, of a particular time and place in France. We choose essential oils that help recreate this narrative while offering the properties that we want our blends to have. After extensive testing of different combinations, we narrow the choices down to two or three for further development.

Development
When the blends are ready for development, the task of making up the test candles begins. The wax has to reach an optimal temperature, which allows the oils to interact fully with the molten wax. Once this has happened, we then add the blended oils into the mixture before pouring the finished mix into the prepared jars and leaving the candles to set.

Testing
Patience is then needed as it takes a minimum of 2 weeks, sometimes longer, whilst the candles cure. After we are happy that the fragrance has developed fully, the testing begins. This process is essential to ensure that the wicks chosen will work with the fragrance choices and wax. We need to be fully satisfied that the final wick choice gives the ideal fragrance throw, burn rate and a completely clean burn. If the wicks don’t perform properly, the testing process must start again from the beginning. Once we are happy with the wick performance, a final decision is then taken based on which of the shortlisted blends provides the best fragrance story. The final choice is the one that will become the candle our customers will get to know and love.

Outcome
After choosing the ‘one’, the whole process begins again, making up the final test candles in the selected fragrance and wick combination to ensure the initial testing was correct. Once we are happy with all the testing, then the actual candle making process begins, but that’s a story for another time.
